What is trauma-informed practice?
Who is it for?

And why decolonized?

From awareness to action.

Trauma-informed means organizations, groups, and communities have an awareness about the existence of trauma, aim to prevent trauma from occurring, foster regulation skills in staff and clients, reduce opportunities for re-traumatizing, and create a culture of safety and care.

We adopt trauma-informed practices (i.e. empowerment, mutuality, safety, trustworthiness) that are grounded in research and knowledge from Indigenous and Western worldviews.

Applicable for all.

Trauma-informed practices can be applied to ALL sectors. We work with not-for-profits, Indigenous communities, businesses, schools, etc. Implementing trauma-informed practices will support people to better interact with each other and the work of your organization.

Decolonized.

We believe an effective trauma-informed approach is a decolonized approach. We believe in order to support creating a safety and ease for all, trauma-informed practices must acknowledge the harm and trauma caused and being caused to Indigenous people as a result of colonization. We explore Indigenous trauma theory and Indigenous approaches to trauma-informed practices.

What is trauma-informed practice not?

  • Not therapy. Instead trauma-informed practices are the values we put into action to help people interact fully in the spaces and relationships we are crafting.

  • Not needing to know someone's trauma history. Instead trauma-informed practices underpin that people may or may not have experienced trauma. In having an understanding of Indigenous trauma theory and neurobiology, we can proactively instigate practices to encourage safety for all people regardless of their history.

  • Not only for the healthcare sector. Instead trauma-informed practices apply to all sectors.
  • Not something we need to be scared of. Instead we demystify trauma-informed practices and showcase how they can be implemented as simple accessible actions and approaches.
